About the Artist
Jane McCance SSA (b.1974) is an alumna of Glasgow School of Art and the University of Glasgow. Her work has been shown extensively throughout the UK.
Of Scottish and Danish parentage, Jane’s work is influenced by the landscape of both Scotland and Scandinavia. She is concerned with themes of memory, loss and renewal; the ability of nature and the human spirit to renew and continue themes. Her landscape paintings are a response to her sense of ‘inhaling’ the environment as she stands ‘in’ it; a feeling of not just wishing to ‘look’ but to consume and keep it.
Following her exploration of the St Davids peninsula Jane created this series of paintings which captures the evanescent and mercurial quality of the Atlantic light as it pervades and penetrates the landscape. This light settling seamlessly into the Atlantic horizon has a physical presence as it invades and occupies the spaces between the brooding power of the cliffs and hills.
