About Artist & Art Details
John Cleal (1929–2007) was a renowned artist and sculptor and founder of Workshop Wales Gallery, near Fishguard. Born in South Africa he trained as a signwriter and worked as a layout artist and illustrator before moving to London in the 1950s, where he worked for a newspaper with his own weekly column. He moved back to his native South Africa some years later and established a design studio, but returned to England in 1960 with his wife and four children after the Sharpeville shootings. In 1962 Cleal moved to Fishguard, where he farmed for eight years before founding Workshop Wales Gallery.
