BORN AT ROCH CASTLE
Lucy Walter was born at Roch Castle around 1630, growing up in the castle that was then her family home. The Walters were a well-connected Pembrokeshire family, and Lucy spent her early years surrounded by the landscape that would later become the setting for one of Roch Castle’s most enduring tales.
A CONNECTION TO THE CROWN
Lucy’s life would take her far beyond Roch. In 1648, while in The Hague, she met Charles, then Prince of Wales and later King Charles II. Their relationship continued for several years, and Lucy became the mother of his son, James Crofts, who Charles later made Duke of Monmouth.
THE LADY IN WHITE
Today, Roch Castle is said to be visited by the ghost of Lucy Walter. Legend tells of a ghostly figure in a shimmering white gown appearing in the castle’s corridors and rooms. Some accounts describe her gliding through closed doors, while others speak of footsteps heard in the night. Whether Lucy really walks the castle she once called home remains a mystery.
